The iTOXcontrol technology is based on a bioassay for assessing the toxicity of water. It employs the bioluminescent bacterium Vibrio fischeri, that is internally cultivated, which emits light as a natural response to stress, particularly in the presence of toxic substances. In the test, water samples are exposed to Vibrio fischeri; the reduction in bioluminescence is measured using a luminometer. The greater the reduction in light emission compared to a control sample, the higher the toxicity of the tested sample. iTOXcontrol provides speed, simplicity, and sensitivity and is a valuable tool in environmental monitoring, industrial discharge assessments, and regulatory compliance evaluations, providing rapid indications of the overall toxicity of water samples.
